“No, absolutely not.” Gia was firm about staying with me. “I’m fine to continue on with you in my condition. I’m a gypsy, Phoenix, it’s what we do! We raise our children on the road and they benefit from the great education that comes with travel.”

“But you should not ride a horse while pregnant, no one does that,” I said, desperately worried that she should risk her baby for me. “This is my quest, it is not yours, you should at least rest in one place for the duration?”

“Indeed, and I have accounted for that. The leader here is quite taken with the quality of my mare, and he offers me a strong pulling horse and a wagon in exchange for her. I shall have a bed to rest in and plenty of comforts and shade, yet still be able to travel.” She gave me a brilliant smile. “So, you see, it is all taken care of; talk of it no more.”

I approached Erastus next, thinking that he would agree with me, but he took the same stance as Gia. “Gia is committed to seeing this through with you, Phoenix. You mean a great deal to her. I don’t know exactly what happened between you in the past, but she feels that she owes you this. If you deny her, it will upset her greatly. I don’t want her upset, especially at this time. I am doing my best to embrace the customs of your people, and it seems to me that all those I have met while with you both would consider it unworthy if we found somewhere comfortable to settle down while you went on alone.”

“But I won’t be alone. Our kind are all over this region, I can always find company.”

“I am sworn to protect you. Not all can do that as well as I can.” He folded his arms across his massive chest and I heaved out a frustrated breath, knowing that he wasn’t going to change his mind either.

“Very well.” I accepted it with gratitude, but inside was seething with Kinkaso. He had taken his prize and given me nothing useful in return. I vowed I would make him wait a very long time before he saw me again.

We left the following day and began our journey to Egypt. I took Nomad with me and the dog ran beside my horse every morning for an hour before leaping into the wagon and sitting in the driving seat beside Gia as she swayed along lazily behind us.

Gia grew plumper, as did Nomad, and it was a happy time. I began to train with Erastus instead of Gia, and my muscles grew stronger and my reflexes sharper than ever as he taught me to fight as well as any man.

They named the boy Gian. He was gorgeous, his skin tone almost as dark as his father’s but his eyes were the same almond shape as Gia. He had her pointed little chin, too. We all fell completely in love with him, but none seemed so devoted as Nomad.
